Troubleshooting a defective electrical socket
It’s common for an electrical outlet to stop working or become defective. If you take the proper safety precautions and are logical in your troubleshooting, you can solve most problems with electrical outlets.
The different types of electrical outlets
As you’ve probably noticed, the 120-volt outlets in your home don’t all look the same. The type used for the bedroom may not be ideal for the bathroom, and the outlets at the kitchen table also differ in their features and wiring size, even though they all basically supply the same 120-volt source to an outlet.
The right test equipment for troubleshooting
You should never troubleshoot live circuits unless you have a solid background knowledge of what an electrician does and know and follow all safe practices.
Anyone with a basic knowledge of electricity will be tempted to perform electrical repairs on their own, but they should never attempt to open live circuit boxes without following the safety practices and precautions associated with the field or without having the proper tools for the job, two of which are the outlet tester and multimeter.
Troubleshooting a broken circuit
The best tool for troubleshooting electrical outlets is the outlet tester. A particularly worthwhile model is the outlet tester, which serves a dual function, as it includes a residual current device that allows you to check all of your GFCI outlets and all of the standard outlets connected to GFCI outlets in your home.
Troubleshooting a faulty circuit breaker
While not very common, a faulty or defective circuit breaker is still a possibility that should be considered.
If you see on the main panel that the breaker has indeed tripped, you know for sure that there is either a definite short in that circuit. Sometimes the breaker is defective and cannot be re-energized.
